In naturalized settings, they love to be near, but not in, water. A slightly acid soil, lots of water, a good mulch and full sun are their main requirements. Do not plant in raised beds. At planting time, the roots must be moist. If necessary, soak the roots for at least 12 hours before planting. Plant the division, or the pot, 1-2 inches below the soil surface. Water well and keep wet the first season. Mulches are very helpful, especially during long dry periods. Late in the fall, when they go dormant, they should be cut back to about one inch. Feed them heavily in the early spring with a balanced fertilizer or mulch with compost containing nitrogen. |
